Sex Education Forum
Empowering Advocacy Through Accessible Design
The Sex Education Forum (SEF) is a leading voice in championing inclusive, evidence-based relationships and sex education (RSE) across the UK. In 2024, amidst a renewed national debate around the future of RSE in schools, SEF sought support in strengthening its digital presence. They needed to engage new audiences through clear, accessible social media communications that reflected their values of inclusion, collaboration, and equity — particularly during key campaigns such as Disability Pride Month and the public consultation on RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education).
The core challenges were twofold. Firstly, SEF lacked consistency in their visual output, making it harder for key messages to resonate across social media. Secondly, previous materials didn’t always meet accessibility best practices, limiting their reach and effectiveness, a particular focus given SEF’s commitment to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). As a small team working on tight timelines, they needed a solution that was both efficient and empowering.
We designed a flexible library of Canva templates tailored to SEF’s needs, enabling their team to produce compelling, on-brand content with ease. Accessibility was built into every step: we ensured high-contrast colour combinations compliant with WCAG AA standards, recommended best practices for alt text, and used legible, dyslexia-friendly fonts.
The templates included modular layouts for key content types - such as quote graphics, data-driven posts, calls to action, and announcements — all designed to be mixed and matched depending on campaign goals.
Working collaboratively with SEF, we aligned the visual identity with their existing brand while modernising elements to feel more vibrant and engaging. Illustrations, colour palettes, and tone of voice were all chosen to be warm, clear, and youth-friendly, while also professional enough to resonate with educators and policy stakeholders.
